Do you ever find yourself stuck with what to do with your 3rd graders and their common core standards?! I know I do...and it's not just my 3rd graders it's pretty much all grades. :) Ha! I thought I'd share with you a couple of worksheets I have created to use with my little 3rd graders.
Here are a few ideas!
RL.3.7
"Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting)."
In this activity the student reads a short story which has an illustration to help answer the questions. Using both the reading and the illustrations the student is asked 3 specific questions.
RI.3.8
"Describe the logical connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text (e.g., comparison, cause/effect, first/second/third in a sequence)".
In this activity the student is asked to read the short story about bones. Then the student uses the sequence boxes below to sequence what happened in the story.
RF.3.3 a
"Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes."
In this activity the student is given common prefixes or suffixes. Then the student writes a definition to the word in the middle column based on the prefix or suffix that is added to the word.
SL.3.6
"Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification."
For this activity I will pick an activity to work on one of their goals for the session and then focus on these four questions so that I can answer them accurately at the end of the session (Met, In Progress, or Not Met). I will often times fill these chart out multiple times throughout the quarter to have information to share during the grading periods.
W.3.2 c
"Use linking words and phrases (e.g., also, another, and, more, but) to connect ideas within categories of information)."
In this activity the student is asked to write about something that they know how to do and to explain the steps involved in "how to" do it. This student chose to write about how to make a PP&J sandwich and the steps involved. :)
L.3.4 b
"Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known affix is added to a known word."
In this activity the student is required to match the word on the left with its definition on the right. The words on the left use known affixes as a clue to the meaning of the words.
