Organize your life into a virtual filing cabinet. I started by creating a work folder.
As a speech therapist I work with multiple different disabilities and different levels of abilities. Sometimes I feel like I spend the whole therapy session just trying to control behaviors and to keep everyone working hard and on task for 30 minutes. Have you ever had that session where you look back and ask yourself if anyone learned anything? Okay I know it's not actually that bad, but sometimes that's honestly how I feel.
I hope your therapy closet doesn't look as crazy as mine! Okay it's not that bad. It's just when you have 5 minutes between groups and you're throwing one therapy item back into the closet and then grabbing another one out it can get crazy fast. I created labels so I can have designated areas for everything and hopefully keep everything in its place.
Most of my therapy sessions are about 30 minutes and for some of my kiddos that 30 minutes can feel much much longer! Last year I implemented using sticker charts. At the beginning of the year I have my students pick out a sticker chart. We discuss what it takes to get to pick out a sticker and add it to their sticker chart at the end of the session. You can individualize the rules per group, based on school
Hello! How is Back to School going for you? This year is my 3rd year at the same school, which I'm SO grateful for being able to stay with the same kiddos and watch them grow. As I'm sure you know the first year in a school can be a little crazy as you're starting to learn about each kiddo. This didn't leave me much "extra" time to organize my student files.
Collecting baseline data always makes me feel a little overwhelmed at the beginning of the school year. I know I have to do it though. :) I need to know where each kiddo is at and to document that they have made progress throughout the school year. I started thinking I wanted to make something that was simple to implement. As I'm sure you know how much free time a speech therapist has.
Can you believe it's already officially summer time! It's amazing how fast time can pass when you're having fun! I decided again this summer to send home summer homework to keep my kiddos thinking about their therapy goals. I didn't want to overwhelm them and wanted to make sure they had plenty of fun this summer so I made sure that it was simple, easy to use, and quick.
Last year I realized some of my kiddos had never heard of Earth Day. I think it is such a great idea to share with our kids the daily impact we have on our planet and the tiny steps we can take each day to make the world a better place for us and for all. The other day I bought my dad a wood case for his new iphone (Yes, my dad can use an iphone and text message!).
Can you believe it's already April?! Only two and a half more months until it's summer. ;) Now that spring break is over I am planning my therapy for the first week back. This year Easter is crazy early in April! I decided that it would be a fun theme for the week after spring break. Here is a sneak peek into my therapy plans for next week.
Okay so I just have to tell you I got these really cute mittens the other day from American Eagle. I was actually suppose to be looking for a birthday present for my friend and then I just had to buy a pair for myself. Have you ever done that?! You're suppose to be buying a gift for someone else and then you end up liking it so much that you buy it for yourself! Oops! I ended up buying my friend and I each a pair.
